We want to give a big shout out to Andrew Snyder of Bootleg Pottery. Andrew is teaching ceramics at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, where our son attends. The work we’re hearing about in Andrew’s class inspired us to experiment in some fun new directions.

We’ve been firing fast and furious to meet orders and have a good showing at our upcoming Woodside show. We whipped out the camera at night for this 4th episode of the Kiln Room at Earthsea Pottery.

The camera couldn’t capture the colors, so you’re left a little bit to your imagination for how they really came out… We’re figuring out the lighting.

We find a giant platter, dinnerware, more custom orders, and some experimentation.

In this firing we have a lot of Peggy’s wax resist, and most came out exquisitely; a large custom ordered vase (with elephants); and a special dinnerware set that humbles and reminds us that experience provides some, but nowhere close to all, answers.

Since doing this video Michael went to the ‘Live Oak’ music fest and had a great time. It was a wake-up-early and stay-open-late style festival, with amazing musicians playing through the night. The long hours, with wonderful artistic benefits of shows… It’s one of so many reasons we love what we do.

In the video Michael talks through and throws a large vase using his new style and design, describes how to throw a 4′ tall masterpiece with 120 pounds of clay, and reminisces on some early teaching experiences at the Atascadero Mental Hospital – for the criminally insane (no, he was not a patient!)

(note: Audio for the first 7 minutes are terrible. It’s good after that. Sorry!)
